What to look for

Match the consumable to your parent metal and process: mild-steel MIG runs on SG2/G3Si1 wire under an argon/CO2 mix, stainless needs 308/316 wire or rod, and aluminium wants pure argon and a matched 4043 or 5356 grade. Buy wire and rod in the diameter your machine and joint call for — 0.6/0.8/1.0mm are the everyday MIG sizes, 1.6/2.4mm the common TIG rods — and keep a spare set of contact tips, shrouds and tungstens on the shelf so a worn consumable never stops the job.
