What to look for

An auto-darkening helmet darkens the instant the arc strikes, so you can position work with the hood down — look for a variable DIN 9-13 shade, adjustable sensitivity and delay, a wide viewing area and multiple arc sensors. Grind-mode is handy for switching between welding and finishing without lifting the hood.
