What to look for

Rate a plasma cutter by its clean-cut capacity (not its rarely-usable severance maximum) and match it to the thickness you cut most. Look for a good duty cycle, easy access to consumables (tips and electrodes are the running cost), and a decent air supply — plasma needs clean, dry compressed air, so a good filter or dryer is essential for consumable life and cut quality.
