What to look for

Prep beats paint every time: degrease and key the surface, then prime bare steel — zinc-rich primer for corrosion protection — before your topcoat. Work in thin, even coats and let each flash off, and match the product to the job, from fast-drying enamels for general steelwork to galvanising sprays for touching up welds on zinc-coated stock.
